Software Guide

Game Development Software

Game Development Software is various kinds of software used to make video games.

Software Development

Development Models

Open Source

In open source, the code is available to developers under an open source license such as the GNU.

Closed Source

In closed source, an individual or company develops the software and only distributes the binary file.

Distribution Models

Freeware

Freeware is a term that denotes that a piece of game creation software is available for free. This does not mean that it is in any way open source, but rather, simply available free of charge.

See : What is a License? - general introduction to licenses.

Development Stages

Beta

Beta is a stage in game development where the game has been completed, internally debugged, and now ready to be tested by people outside of the development group for unseen bugs. Typically, there are two kinds of beta-testing :

  • Open Beta - Where anyone who wants can download the game and test it.
  • Closed Beta - Where only selected people with debugging skills are allowed to test it.

Open Beta usually follows closed beta, however, it is not always necessary.
