A shooter is a game genre where the primary weapon of the player object (or even the player, in the case of a light gun game) is a projectile weapon (or simulated projectile weapon, once again in the case of a light gun game).
Shooting Gallery Games

The first kind of shooters were shooting gallery games, which were electronic versions of the common carnival game that was often played in the non-electronic arcades that pre-existed the video arcade generation. Shooting gallery games required the player to shoot as many targets as possible within a given time.
Slide Shooters

A slide shooter is a game where the player object slides in two directions, usually left and right at the bottom of the screen. It therefore appears that the player object slides.
Vertical Shooters
A vertical shooter or vert shooter is an evolution of the slide shooter where the background scrolls automatically downward. Vertical shooters evolved from slide shooters.
