A power up is a collectible icon that gives the player object an ability or increases an ability that it already has.

For example, in many modern vertical shooters, power ups only increase the power of the native weapon of the player object. If the player object's native weapon is a laser, then collecting a power up could make it stronger or shoot faster.

In other games, power ups give the player object an ability.
