list of bad starts
There are just some games that you should never, ever try as your first game. What seems like it could be simple turns out to be overly complex for the novice. If you are trying to think of a project, please don't try to make one of these games first.
The best first game is a simple arcade game like Pong or Frogger.
The list of bad starts
- RPG
- RPGs take alot of time and dedication to get right. Make a few one screen games before you start on your RPG. Or, use game design software specifically designed to make RPGs.
- MMORPG
- Make an RPG first.
- RTS
- An RTS requires alot of AI and path-finding knowledge. Many novices have ended their career here because they started with one.
- Fighting Game
- Even the easiest to program fighting game requires detailed knowledge of sprite animation and collision detection.
- Large Scale Simulations
- Unless you are a math whiz, don't bother. You however, may want to try a smaller simulation.
- Strategy RPG
- Same as RTS.
