A first person shooter or FPS is a type of 3D shooter where the point of view is that of the player object. First person shooters are typified by these qualities :
- A first person point of view, otherwise, it could be a third person shooter.
- The ability to freely target using mouse aiming or a light gun.
- The ability to move freely, otherwise it's a rail shooter or a target shooter.
2D vs. 3D FPS
Early first person shooters used 2D collision detection rather than 3D collision detection. Examples of this type of "2D FPS" are Wolfenstien 3D and Doom, both early FPSes from Id Software.
FPS Creation Software
FPS Creator
FPS Creator is a game design program designed to make 3D first person shooters. FPS Creator is available for Microsoft Windows only and requires Direct X. It uses quite a bit more resources than it should. UnrealEd runs smoother, and is capable of making better FPS games. Additionally, the help file is an unsearchable PDF, which is extremely annoying.
UnrealEd
UnrealEd is a game specific game editor for the Unreal and Unreal line of games. UnrealEd allows you to modify scripts written in UnrealScript that can modify almost every aspect of the game. It also is a level designer which can be used to make your own Unreal Tournament levels.
