Hello Everyone.

I woke up this morning and decided that I want to make video games. Computer games have always been fascinating me, especially how the game itself works. The texture, the coding… So I Google a bit around and found this amazing site and decided to join here and introduce myself. :)
I have minor experience in 3d modeling and web designing. But I doubt that will come in handy in this case. My main interest is all sorts of games genres (Platform, RPGs, Action) I just want to start low and hopefully be able to get further into it…
I'm just interested in getting started :) the basics… So if anyone could set me off in the right direction it would be appreciated.
I'm looking forward to it :)

What are the costs please?

As a complete and utter novice in the game world, I haven't got a game console or even played a computer game! Except the ping pong tennis games available in the late 1970's! What sort of budget do I need to get started please?

I work for myself and have had a good idea (I think) for a game. I know, nothing new being said there, its all been heard before. What I need to know before I start racing off buying software or whatever, is the initial costs for software to create a game! Are there any free programs to cut my teeth on? Or are all programs charged on a level of quality 3d images and gizmo's for making it all work!

Being a complete and utter novice in this arena and only having a basic knowledge of computers nevermind creating, designing and building a game, am wasting my time? I usually end up putting my fist through the monitor when computers don't do as I want or they just freeze up and dont want to be obedient. I have been known to unplug them and charge outside, fill them with thinners or petrol and yes, set the damn things on fire! The satisfaction of destroying something which tries to restrict or tell me I am not allowed to do something because of "permission" or worse still it tells me "Error Printing" but then doesn't tell me what the stupid error is so I can sort it is indeed an uplifting and altogether like breaking out of a restricted communist police state, freedom from the cyber box. You should all try it, its most liberating to destroy something that works against you! Not being a hugely patient 43 year old bloke my also work against me in computer gaming?

So, now you have an idea of my angle on game creation, costs first. You all now know I will destroy a computer if the dratted thing annoys me! And, you all know my patience level rarely gets above above 2 on the scale of 1 - 10 if things go wrong, and I cannot establish a reason for it going wrong.

Therefore, my final question must be. Do you think I am the right sort of person to attempt such a task? Or should we all laugh it off and I will slip quietly away back into the real world. Maybe I should start revolutionary movement against the machines when WW3 comes along?

If you have read this far, thankyou for your understanding and patience!

Kind regards,
DingleZapper.

Hi, I'm a 6th grade technology teacher and next quarter I have promised my students we can use gamemaker. Their big project will be to create learning games about space. One of my web design students showed me a little bit about it last week, and I plan to explore it on my own, but figured back up and support would be great. So, thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,
I have had a brilliant idea for a game, and I do have quite a few ideas.
My problem is that I don't actually know where to begin making it.
My actual idea without giving it away could be made in many forms, with a diablo or torchlight like interface being the ideal but it could also work as a roguelike.
Now because I actually have very little skill in actually making games, mainly because I don't actually know any coding languages is there anyway to get around this?
Or is my best bet to just learn how to program or find some friends that can program?
If anyone is experienced with roguelikes could you please give me a good place to start, I'm not even sure what language would be best for them.

Like everyone else new, I'm looking for advice and direction to make my own game. My name is Marcus and after reading some of the intros, at 36 I'm probably the oldest newb here. :( But I bet I'm younger at heart than most - even if my wife calls it immaturity. :P I'm starting Game Design school in a few weeks, but I'm chomping at the bit to get started so I decided to do some preliminary research and maybe even start learning to program, with which I have very little experience. I have done a little C++ programming over a decade ago, so I hope there is still things that are the same. I have no idea how code turns into moving pixels and I'm anxious to learn everything (thus my desire to go into Game Design and not just Programming).
I would like to learn how to make a game in the third person adventure genre (I think it's called) similar to God of War, Assassin's Creed, Darksiders, etc.. I really liked how Darksiders seemed to pay more homage to God of War and Legend of Zelda (and even Portal) than rip them off. Some reviews condemned it for its similarities, but I thought it was like getting 2 (and a half..heh) games for the price of one!
Well, I won't be able to get any answers if I don't let someone know I'm here and answer my post so I'll shut up now.
Please tell me where I should start…like what program would be best for me to begin with in building my programming experience toward making games like that. I don't expect to make a game like that by myself in a year or 4 but I will do what needs to be done to get it done by year 5, so to speak.
Thanks in advance,
Marcus

Heya GD'ers,

While working on my game (Project:Meteor), I've made some progress, little by little.
Tho I'm rather stuck now with making the player interact with a NPC.

Situation:
1 Room : player & one NPC
No code : Cannot even manage to find that option anywhere. (Game maker 7.0 LITE)
Current version of my game : P:M v1.10b

I've set up both objects in the room (player and NPC),
while setting up a variable that checks if interaction is possible (probably totally screw it up sadly).
Tried to look at the guide about RPG NPC's on the website, but nothing is explained at all there.

Please do not FIX the problem, but teach me what to look at instead,so I can fix it myself.
I want to learn but haven't found any guide so far explaining what I could do.

Hoping to see a reply which is rich of information soon,
Thank you.

As i learn to program i would like to start by designing a simple side scrolling game that could be played like Mario just to get the hang of how it all works. Then as i work my way up i would work into a basic RPg simulator something To set up a character quickly and run through a turn based battle. That would be completely text based. Then when i have the experience and time i would like to design my dream game which i call FreeFantasy. It is a sandbox rpg like morrowind. But with a twist … A new battle system. yes this is turn based. And much like final fantasy. When i begin work on that project i would like a small team (up to 10 members) to help design different axpects of the game. The world of FreeFantasy would start small. but through design we could add new areas characters and items. thus making it a never ending project. or close to never ending.
To introduce myself i like programming from what i have done/tried. I like finalfantasy…obviously. Though i do believe there is a little to much fan-boyism surrounding it. …Ugh i don't know what else to say.
