Hi all, I am a very experienced industry programmer but am new to games. I wrote embedded systems software in C/Assembly language for many years, learned and programmed in PHP/MySQL (websites),JavaScript (interesting), Perl (cryptic), QuickBASIC (my first compileable language - I loved it), Java, Pascal, and Forth early on.
I love the concept of game programming and I am working in Java on my first game. I am having some troubles/growing pains, but basically I love it! I'm a fan of Star Control II (aka 'The Ur-Quan Masters') in a big way, and I love a good 2D game. Now I'm ready to create my own!

Hi People,

Just like to say hi and hopefully get to know a few of you along with gaining some knowledgable info from you all :)

I'm toying with the idea of getting into the games design industry but totally in the dark when it comes to where to start. I've looked into local courses in games design and in particular aiming for a foundation degree to start. However I'm faced with having no knowledge/experience in the role (apart from marathon gaming sessions and being a serious critic when coming to games).

I'd like to know where would be the best place to start, eg. self taught C++, art lessons, ect. I most certainly think I've got a creative side to implement idea's but just need some guidance of how to bring my idea's together.

Hope to hear from you soon

Phil

hello everyody out there, I am Afro, I have a great idea of a sports game that is mix between Grand theft auto and Madden. I am not sure how teo explain it, but I got the idea from playing a Tony Hawk game, Grand Theft Auto, and dynasty mode on madden. Basicly you start as a highschool senior, and your goal is to become a hall of fame sports legend by performing various task in real world situations like Grand Theft Auto with a story line that will help you gain attributes which will make you a better player on the field, when playing the actual game you play a normal madden football game and after the game and season you have all week and off-season to do differnt things to make your character better. that is a rough idea but i feel if i make this game it would be a new generation of sports games to come. the problem is I have no idea what I am doing thus why I am here? so help suggestions good wishes and ideas are welcome.

hi im danny i am 14 years old and attend heath park high school and in my product design class we are designing a game to produce a game cover but i thinkmy design is very good and so does everone else whos seen it.the bacic plot is the time is baced on the period back to bows and arrows swords and it is like of myth orcs against humans but the people who died in the warhave returned as undead and seek to annilate everyone so you pick from orcs or humans and you pick a class the classes are warriours, rouges, mages, rangers and healers and you level up from 1 to 100 and stop the undead ans win the war against the oposing faction. thats the bacic design and i have draw up some diffrent fetures like bosses wepons characters and other things.

So I've always wanted to make video games, and I'm just now deciding to learn how to program. (30 years old). Computer-savvy, but very little programming knowledge (mostly for web), and I have some experience with 3D and 2D graphics.

I downloaded PlayBasic learning edition, so goal 1 is to take a look at that and see what I'm getting myself into.

Hello everyone ;)

I have been dabling in game creation since I got mu hands on an Amiga 500 (No I'm not that old.. only 32) but it was my first real computer.

Since then I have been successful at many little projects, worked my way through hand drawing, 3d modeling, texturing, programming, web deisgn..and many other little projects used for learning, and now I have found myself making a Browser game. No not Flash but a good PHP / HTML / CSS / MySQL / Javascript browser game.

I have been building this new project for over a month now and I figured I would get some people together for my next project. I figure with this one under my belt I can make something even cooler for my next game.

Either way, you can view some more information about my current project here www.gotbrainsentertainment.com , well a few screen shots anyways. The game is in nearly ready for public beta. I have a some testers doing the bulk of the major bug finding right now.. while I finish up making the rest of the graphical assets.

I've been looking for a game programming community to hang around and share what i learn with, but nothing really caught my eye until I stumbled onto GDN ;)

Oh.. I almost forgot…

Hello :)

Happy New Year everyone!

I stumbled across this site whilst hunting for information regarding game design documentation. It's been a long held ambition of mine (like many of you no doubt) to create an online persistent world environment using the Neverwinter Nights 2 toolset. Easier said than done!

I've been playing the original Neverwinter Nights game for several years, eventually culminating with a position as DM on one of the better persistent worlds (Avlis). I'm also a keen pen and paper gamer, as well as various other games.

I hope to be able to share ideas with you all, from initial concepts through to the final product. I know that I'm going to have to start small, and build upon the "modules", as well as create a fairly rich world background, probably before I put cursor to toolset!

Catch you soon.

swoods

Hello everyone!

My name is Joe. I am from Slovakia, so I'm sorry for my English first. I am 16, and I am interested in game design for over a year. I have tried many programming languages, engines and programs (such as GameMaker). I read the book "Art of Game Design", many articles and tutorials on the internet. A few times I even tried to create some game, but I never finish any. Once I would like to become a game designer, so I would like to create some small game for start. Something like text-based strategy game… Could you recommend me some good program? Thanks.

Well guys and gals, my name is Ryan (ry, ryguy, moron) any personal reference will work as long as I know you are talking to me. My main problem is such, when I was 12 years old I sat down with a text-book on GW-BASIC and taught myself how to program. I have no formal education in programming although coding concepts and structure come second-nature to me. I have been coding my own games for 20 years and have gotten much satisfaction from doing so, however, with the introduction of the WWW I have a bridge to gap in understanding. First let me explain the project briefly:

Sci-Fi, browser-based, long-term, strategy war game.

Principal elements:
Resource gathering
Production (troops, vehicles, research etc.)
Attacks and defense
Clan structure

This is where I need help, I could EASILY code such a program though I lack the understanding of getting the variables transferred from the End User's browser to the web-host and then downloading the information to my home computer (which I will use in the begining as a server) for calculation. The project itself is very simple, just form-fill by the End User and the data sent to a web-host. Receiving the data from the web-host to my computer and the calculated results updated on the web-host. How do I get the info from the user to the web-host and from the web-host to my computer? Any explination on this process would be fantastic. I know how to build web-pages (basic knowledge only) and I know how to write the code, I just don't understand how to interface with the go-between of the web-host that stores the information. By the way, I'm sure this thread is in the wrong category and would appreciate it if an admin could move it to a more appopriate section. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this - Ryan

Hi everybody,

I've been a game nerd ever since I was 5 and planted in front of a NES with the original Mario Bros. I was designing Mario levels (on paper) by age 8 and have been toying with ideas for games ever since.

Lately I've been unemployed and looking for things to devote my time to. I'm thinking now might be a good time to get started on making some basic games (at first) until I've built up enough knowledge to make something half decent. Eventually I'd like to make my own epic style of RPG (and maybe one day MMORPG).

My biggest drawback - I know next to nothing about programming, bar what I can remember from computer studies in high school. Which is unfortunately also, next to nothing (we did a little bit in QBASIC but I was far more interested in girls and fireworks at the time).

I'm looking at putting together a basic platformer to get my head around game design. From what I can see on this website (great info by the way, thanks) PlayBasic would be a good place to start. I'm not all that worried about WHAT is going to be jumping from platform to platform at the moment, more how. Can anyone recommend some good reading to get me started?

Cheers.

But really I just want to learn how to design in whatever form so that I can make whatever pops into my mind :)

This site looks awesome, everyone seems so friendly and helpful, Hopefully i can spend a bit of time here :)
