Basic Dialects

A BASIC dialect or BASIC variant is a programming language based on the original Dartmouth BASIC, developed in 1964. Technically any form of BASIC that is not Dartmouth BASIC is a BASIC dialect.

Not all BASIC dialects are the same, even though they all spring from the same source. Glaring differences from the norm are known as "whack-sticks", taking it's meaning from the idea that the author "took BASIC and beat it with a whack-stick."

While Dartmouth BASIC is the genesis of all BASIC, it is not the standard. Most modern BASICs are based on some form of Microsoft BASIC.
