Homebrew

The Atari 2600 is a popular homebrew game system for two reasons :

  • there are many programmers who remember it fondly
  • most people believe programming for the Atari 2600 would be easier than it is.

The TIA

The TIA (Television Interface Adapter) is the Atari 2600's graphics chip. It is difficult to program and most would-be homebrew developers wind up struggling with the TIA.

BASIC Programming Cartridge

While the Atari 2600 was popular, a cartridge was sold with a primitive form of BASIC on it. This cartridge is named, aptly enough, BASIC Programming. With it, you can create simple programs for the Atari 2600.
