Abilities are often used in RPG's to extend battles from simple sword slashing action to more powerful mostly magic attacks. The use of abilities mostly cost ability points, action points, magic points or similar.
There are several kinds of Abilities:
Melee
Melee - Melee skills can be mighty blows that cut through enemy monsters, a cool animated powerful combo hit, or even stealing items from enemies.
Magic
Magic - It's fun to fry or freeze your opponents to death.
Traditionally magic is cut down to the elements fire, water, earth, and air. Many games however, use magic to induce status changes, boost stats, heal or cure.
Magic spells can often be combined to even more powerful attacks. (fire+wind magic can results in an explosion).
Elemental magic is also common to induce Status changes like ice magic is likely to slow enemies or players down.
